In this case study, I share how I supported a client to recover from burnout, rebuild confidence, and create a healthier, more balanced future using hypnotherapy, self-regulation tools and practical techniques.

Rob* came to see me during a difficult period in his life. He had always been a high achiever, working in a fast-paced, high-pressure role. For years, he pushed through stress and responsibility without stopping to recognise the impact on his wellbeing.
Eventually, a series of health challenges and a relationship breakdown forced things to a halt. Looking back, Rob now understands that he had been experiencing burnout—something that had built gradually over time.
Last year, he made the decision to leave his job on medical grounds. He saved a bit of money to do so, and focused on having some time off to “regroup”.
While this created space for recovery, it also brought a profound sense of loss. Loss of identity, structure, purpose, and status. When he first came for hypnotherapy, he described:
Low mood and symptoms of depression
Anxiety about the future
A sense of overwhelm and lack of direction

Rob's Hypnotherapy Sessions
Rob is based in the South of England, so our sessions were online. He had six sessions in total. Our work together focused on gently helping Rob regain a sense of control—both internally and in how he approached his future.
We began with hypnotherapy sessions designed to calm his nervous system and reduce the intensity of stress and anxiety. I also taught him simple self-hypnosis techniques, so he could continue this work independently between sessions. This gave him a practical tool to settle his mind, particularly during moments of overwhelm.
Breathing techniques formed another key part of our work. By learning how to regulate his breath, Rob was able to interrupt the stress response and create space to think more clearly.
Alongside this, we introduced self-awareness tools to help him better understand his own patterns. One that resonated strongly with him was the “traffic light” model:
Green – feeling balanced, calm, and in control
Amber – early signs of stress or pressure building
Red – overwhelm, anxiety, or shutdown
This simple framework helped Rob recognise his triggers earlier and respond before things escalated. Instead of pushing through, he began to listen to what his mind and body were telling him.
A key part of our hypnotherapy work involved strengthening Rob’s sense of self-belief. After leaving his career, his confidence had understandably taken a hit.
Through carefully structured hypnotic suggestions, we worked on reframing how he saw himself—not as someone who had “lost” something, but as someone who had made a necessary and courageous decision to protect his health and future.
Gradually, this shift in perspective allowed him to reconnect with his strengths and begin thinking about what he truly wanted next, rather than what he felt he should do.

The Impact
The changes in Rob have been significant.
He now describes feeling more positive, more grounded, and more in control of his direction. Rather than rushing back into high-pressure environments, he has taken a thoughtful and intentional approach to his next steps.
He has enrolled on a new college course aligned with his interests, planned a period of travelling to create space and perspective, built regular exercise into his routine to support both his physical and mental wellbeing. More importantly, he has tools and confidence to manage his stress and anxiety long term.
“The sessions enabled me to find myself again. I have learned how to become more self aware and recognise the signs of anxiety before they build. I have tools now to put myself back in the “green” zone. It has been a really powerful experience”. Rob.
Burnout does not mean failure
Rob’s journey is a powerful reminder that burnout doesn’t mean failure. Often, it’s a signal that something needs to change.
With the right support, it’s possible not just to recover, but to rebuild in a way that is healthier, more balanced, and more aligned with who you are.
